One of the nicest perks about the advent of the flat panel TV has been the fact that they can be mounted to the wall, instead of taking up floor space. While this was a big selling point when the technology was first introduced, there are other advantages as well. Here are a few of them, in no particular order.
- Design and Decorating freedom. You no longer have to construct the room around the TV. Remember those huge, clunky-looking rear-projection TVs, and how they would take over an entire wall? Thankfully, those days are over! Using a flat TV wall mount, your TV can go right on the wall, in much the same way a picture would. (I once saw a TV room where the wall was extended inward by almost 2 feet so the massive 52” rear-projection TV could be built into the wall. From the front it looked great, almost like a fireplace. However, from the rear it was easy to see how much of the floor space in the room had to be sacrificed.)
- Increased seating space. The space which used to be occupied by the towering monolithic structure known as the ‘entertainment center’ can now be occupied by humans. Where the TV used to sit, you can now place a chair, loveseat, or even a couch. As a result, your living room can be used for living!
- Increased safety. Maybe this one isn’t as obvious. With the old CRT screens, you had a big, front-heavy TV sitting on top of a (usually) unstable stand of some sort. In houses where small children are present, this is a recipe for disaster. Years ago, I used to deliver TVs and I can tell you from experience that a TV with a 36” screen packs a lot of weight into a comparatively small area. As the proud parent of a pair of toddlers, I am so thankful that flat TV wall mounts have made it possible to keep my girls out of harm’s way.
These are just a few of the advantages that are really just by-products of some amazing technological advances. I’m sure there are many, many more. If you have a flat panel TV, you owe it to yourself and your family to allow a flat TV wall mount to give you your living room back.
