I’ll admit it: I’m old. I can remember when remote controls for were space-age technology. I still remember the first time I had the opportunity to use a remote on a tv. The remote itself was nearly the size of a small brick, and would only cause the channels on the tv to scroll upward. (Since this pre-dated cable tv, it wasn’t such a big deal.) The single button on the remote caused the mechanical tuner on the tv to rotate, advancing the channels. It was hilariously clunky technology by today’s standards, but at the time it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen.
Of course technology has evolved considerably since then, and we now take things for granted that would have seemed inconceivable when I first held that clunky remote. It has become perfectly natural to push a button on our key ring to unlock the car as we approach it (or to find it in the parking lot at the mall), to grab for the remote to turn on a ceiling fan, or even to use our cell phone to pay bills.
As a dedicated fan of all things technical, I will acknowledge that I am most excited about the advances in home entertainment technology. My current must-have is a remote control TV lift. Why? Well, there are a number of reasons.
First of all, I have 2 small children, as well as a couple of larger ones. The little ones are very active, inquisitive toddlers. That means that they are into everything, all the time. Don’t get me wrong; they’re wonderful kids. They’re just very busy exploring their world, which just happens to include my TV. It would be so nice to be able to push a button and have it drop into the floor, safe from their curious little hands.
Speaking of safety, that’s another important factor. A remote control TV lift means the TV is no longer sitting on a wobbly little stand waiting to fall on top of an unsuspecting little bystander.
Another thing I love is that if someone were to (Heaven forbid) break into my home, they are much less likely to steal my TV if they can’t see it.
More than anything though, I have to admit that I just love feeling like George Jetson. You do know who he is, don’t you?
