One of the most convenient ways to move items from one floor to the next is with a home dumbwaiter. Historically, home dumbwaiters have been used in castles and luxury homes for many years, and sometimes businesses or hotels enjoy the conveniences of dumbwaiters as well.
What are Dumbwaiter Elevators?
If you haven’t heard of a dumbwaiter elevator, you can conceptualize it by thinking about an elevator designed to move goods from one floor to the next. When a commercial lift mechanism is used, it can support up to 1000 pounds of goods. But, most residential lifts are only designed to handle between 50 – 100 pounds.
Older dumbwaiters functioned using a pulley system with ropes. Today, the technology is much more advanced, and utilizes an electric drive system. Because of the electric automation, little effort is required to move goods to another floor in the building.
How Dumbwaiters Work
The car space looks like a small elevator, where you can place items onto the shelf. Then, the door is closed and it moves to the floor that you choose through the electrical controls. The lift is built onto a track system which keeps it secure and stable, and there are locks on the car which can activate if a mechanical problem occurs. The lift mechanisms are designed to be sturdy enough to handle the load, and can safely move the goods to an upper or lower floor.
