If you love that pampered, indulgent feeling you get when you stay in a luxury hotel, why not pamper yourself and create that same feeling in your own bedroom? Since we sleep for 1/3 of our lives (or at least we should), go ahead and make your bedroom feel like a vacation spot. Here are a few tips.

  • Don’t skimp on the bedding. Buy some nice sheets; the higher the thread count, the better. Get Egyptian cotton if at all possible. (Yes, there really is a difference.) While you’re at it, get a high-quality mattress and lots of pillows of various sizes. Remember, if you’re not getting a good night’s sleep, everything else becomes a struggle.
  • Find a pair of elegant lamps. Pick up a couple of bedside lamps to go on a nightstand on either side of the bed, along with shades that will keep the lighting in the room warm-feeling. Avoid anything too bright.
  • Install crown molding in the room. This may seem like a minor architectural detail, bit it really adds an air of elegance to the room. Your local home improvement center probably has pre-painted artificial types that look completely convincing when properly installed.
  • Go high-tech. If you really want to jack up the “wow-factor” of your room, you can add an end of bed TV lift. If the design of your room doesn’t accommodate one (for example, if the shape of the room makes having the TV at the foot of the bed impossible), you may be able to use a pop up TV cabinet.
  • Add a mirror. A large, framed mirror not only serves a functional purpose, it also adds a sense of size and space to the room.

As you’re looking for decorative details for the room, keep in mind that you’re not only trying to achieve a certain look, but also a certain feel, a sensation like you get when you stay in a luxury hotel. It’s going to be different for all of us. Go with what makes you feel pampered.
