As we stated in our August Blog, according to a July 2022 study from Market Watch the outdoor television is a trending concept in most developed countries.

The Challenge: How to Protect It

Fortunately, the winterization process of an outdoor TV is neither difficult nor expensive. At INCA TV Lifts we know our televisions, and we are happy to share what you need to know about placing, weatherproofing, and caring for your outdoor TV.

  1. Purchase an Outdoor TV – There is a big difference between outdoor and indoor TVs, and NO, you should not use an indoor television outside. Outdoor TVs have special screens that can be seen in exterior light. Because natural, exterior light is much brighter than indoor light the screens of outdoor televisions are brighter and a bit stronger than those built indoors. Outdoor TVs are also waterproof and built to fight against pollen, as well as, extreme
    temperatures.
  2. Select a Location – First, determine the access to an electrical outlet. Next, try and find a spot that remains shaded for most of the day. It is best to mount it under a patio awning or a protected area that will keep it out of downpours and direct sunlight. Keeping it out of direct sun will extend the life of the TV and reduce screen glare to make watching more comfortable. Finally, ensure you have enough room to seat a group of family and friends.
  3. Mounted or Covered – If you choose to mount the TV, you will need to purchase a TV mount and a full TV cover. This style of cover will protect the entire TV (front, back, mount, everything) from being harmed by extreme weather. Full Covers fit over all types of TVs and mounts, so you don’t have to be concerned about trying to coordinate a cover to your TV. All full TV covers are made of strong water-resistant material that keeps rain and dirt from infiltrating your system. Most covers feature contains a fleece lining, which protects the screen and other sensitive areas of the television. They often include a pouch in the back, which makes accessing cables and controls easy while the TV is covered.

Note: Indoor TV mounts cannot handle outdoor temperatures. They are susceptible to rust and will deteriorate in rain and sun. As you did with your TV, buy a mount rated for outdoor use that features built-in UV protection.

Note: Mounting your TV in a cabinet not only completely closes it off to the outside, but also keeps it safe from theft. The cabinet option can keep it sealed by adding weather strips and caulking so there is no chance of moisture or bright sunlight making its way in.

  4. Cover the Speakers – Most outdoor speakers are weather-resistant rather than weatherproof, so they’ll require some cover. Mount your speakers underneath the eaves to protect them from rain but don’t mount them much higher than 10 feet above the listening area.
  5. Don’t Forget Your Cables – When most cables are exposed to weather, they immediately begin to dry rot. This is a formula for bad connections and even electrical shorts. It is equally important to buy waterproof cables and cable protectors/conduits.
