For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s getting to be time to dock our boats or head for warmer waters. Before long, the snow will be blowing, and the yachting season will come to a close.

As summer turns to fall and we get ready for winter, it’s a good time to think about getting your yacht ready for next year and possibly make some improvements. You’ll want to make sure your yacht has everything it should have, safety-wise, so that you’ll be ready to head out on the water as soon as the weather breaks next year. Make sure you have adequate life jackets, a serviceable EPIRB, life rings, buoys, and a working radio.

Of course, there’s more to yachting than safety equipment. We buy yachts or house boats because we enjoy being out on the water. Every boat owner should have the equipment-and yes, even the toys-that help maximize our time out on the water.

With that in mind, here are five things every yacht owner should have:

1. Fold down flatscreen TV lifts. They’re a great luxury item for the home, and even better for the yacht. Fold down flatscreen TVs store neatly away when you’re not watching, and fold down with the push of a button for viewing whenever you’re ready. They give you more space (when not watching the TV) while protecting your TV from the elements and being bumped. Marine TV swivels are another excellent option.

2. Wine Bar. You want the best when you’re out on the water. If your boat isn’t big enough for a full wine bar, there are mini wine bars which are  perfect for yachts and house boats. Most are designed to store, chill, and preserve one or two bottles of wine.

3. SCUBA/ snorkeling gear. If you don’t already have diving gear on your yacht, you’re really missing out. Why not use the off season to take a SCUBA class at a local community college?

If you’re not headed south for warmer waters this winter, at least use your time and money to outfit your yacht for next year. And while you’re at it, who’s to say you can’t hang out and enjoy the yacht while it’s docked? With fold down flatscreen TV lifts or marine TV swivels, your house boat or yacht can be a great getaway even when you can’t get out on the water.
