Living Room and Family Room Differences
A living room is a more formal area primarily used to entertain guests rather than an everyday living area, with a greater emphasis placed on décor and accessories over comfort and utility.

A family room is a more casual space that you can use to gather with friends and family to watch TV, relax, and eat. When decorating a family room, comfort and utility come first.

The family room is characteristically in the rear of the house off the kitchen, while the living room is in the front of the house and creates the first impression for guests.

Living Room Decorating Trends
If you have both a Living Room and a Family Room, the Living Room should be more formal. Decide where you want the focal point to be in your Living Room (and no, it doesn’t have to be a TV!). Perhaps it’s a stately fireplace, a feature wall, or the incredible view through a
floor-to-ceiling window. Arrange your Living Room furnishings and accessories to highlight the focal point. Houseplants instantly make every room feel more welcoming. Place small succulents on a bookshelf near large, verdant foliage in floor pots.

In your living room, you might consider pairing a neutral colored sofa with a leather ottoman and side chairs upholstered in a fun fabric. Mixing metal objects is also on trend.

One of the mistakes people often make is choosing artwork that is too small for the wall where it will hang. Another usual misstep is hanging artwork too high — it should always be at eye level. On a big wall, it is best to feature an oversized, framed piece that makes a statement or group multiple frames to create a gallery wall.

Decorating Trends for the Family Room
A family room is the part of the house where entertainment commands the spotlight, the kids indulge in their favorite games, and the whole family can relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Don’t hesitate to fill the room – get a rug that fully sits under all your furniture, and don’t buy a love seat if you can fit a three-seater living room sofa in the room. Not only will buying larger-scale furniture look better, but it will also make your experience of this sociable space so much more comfortable. Informal family rooms are also great places to display family photographs.

Child and pet-friendly fabrics and finishes are the best choices must for a busy family room. When devising a family room that is safe for children, select furniture with curved rather than straight edges. Curves are very much on trend for softening the lines in the interior to create a much more welcoming space suitable for the entire household. Choose plush sofas, child-friendly coffee tables, and accessories like throw pillows are just a few must-haves to create a relaxing atmosphere.

If your TV or entertainment center is the focal point of the room, place it in the center of the seating area. If you don’t want your television to always be the focal point, consider putting it in a cabinet with doors that can close or installing a TV lift in a corner near the ceiling or on a floor lift that rises to eye level.
